Breakbulk vs. Bulk Cargo: What’s the Difference?
26 Jul 2026
A plain-language comparison of how these cargo types are handled, priced, and cleared.
Breakbulk cargo and bulk cargo may both move large volumes, but they are not handled the same way. Breakbulk is typically made up of individual pieces or units, while bulk cargo is transported loose in large quantities, such as grains, minerals, or fuel.
The handling process is different from the start. Breakbulk often needs careful counting, labeling, and physical loading by piece, while bulk cargo is usually moved through specialized equipment and measured by weight or volume.
The clearance implications are also different. Breakbulk usually requires more attention to item descriptions and packaging records, while bulk cargo demands tight measurement control and accurate product classification. A mistake in either case can affect cost and timing.
For importers, the important part is knowing which handling method applies before the cargo is shipped. That decision affects cost, storage, inspections, and how quickly the shipment can be processed at arrival.
